A rare opportunity to own a part of Rockport's history. The Mathis House is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. John M Mathis (1831-1922) had his home built for his family in 1868-69. Instrumental in platting the town of Rockport, he served as its first mayor in 1870. In 1880 he deeded the house to his cousin Thomas H Mathis, a leading rancher, shipper and banker. Exhibiting Italiante, Classical and Greek Revival details, the raised cottage features a center passage plan, arcaded basement and entry portico with paired fluted columns. Elegant formal rooms and abundant country kitchen. Grand master bedroom is ensuite. 12-15 foot ceilings and picture molding. Long Leaf Pine flooring. Current owner has added an inground pool for outdoor enjoyment and restored a portion of the interior to its original shiplap. The 18,500 sf lot next door is also for sale - expanding the footprint and possibilities for this unique estate.
